At times, you may find that you have to work yourself up to sexual activity, or are disinterested altogether. The cause may be a less-than-robust libido, and going to the doctor for medicinal help for a low libido can be embarrassing. Instead of looking for pharmaceutical cures, look in your own fridge for a few proven foods that improve libido. While the effects may be short term, you may notice a difference in your level of desire. If food cures don't work for you, see your doctor, as it might be a symptom of a larger problem.
Chocolate
Chocolate has long been touted as a natural aphrodisiac, but no one seems to have an answer as to why it has an effect. Younger women who ate chocolate for a study published by a 2006 Journal of Sexual Medicine had a higher Female Sexual Function Index. However, once the ages of the women were taken into consideration into relation to older women who ate less chocolate, the results may have been more influenced by age than actual chocolate. Still, it is hypothesized that chocolate affects the pleasure centers of the brain through the release of phenylethylamine and serotonin which may make you feel elated, good and more apt to have sex.
Truffles
The rare, fungi truffles that are commonly used in world class cooking have a heavy, musky odor that slightly mimics the odor of natural pheromones. Paired with their novelty, a meal prepared with truffles could help light a fire for a couple.
L-Arginine Rich Foods
Dr. Barbara Bartlik, assistant professor of psychiatry and sex therapist with the Human Sexuality Program at Weill Cornell Medical Center recommends choosing foods that are high in the L-Arginine complex. This complex helps improve circulation in the body, and simply stated, better circulation means better sex. Other foods that contain L-Arginine include peanuts, root vegetables, green vegetables and garlic.
Watermelon
Watermelon contains the chemical citrulline, which has benefits for a cardiovascular system. It also has a relaxing effect on the body, much like a muscle relaxant. The relaxation also occurs in the blood vessels, resulting in better blood flow to all parts of the body, including the sexual organs.
Avocado
A big scoop of guacamole at your next party might be enough to get your libido going. Avocado has large amounts of vitamin B6, which is necessary for male hormone production. Avocado also has benefits for women; it is high in potassium, and potassium regulates the thyroid. A low functioning thyroid can result in an even lower functioning libido.
