When attempting to lose weight, it is recommended to stay within the fat-burning zone. Being in this zone not only burns fat but also burns calories. It is helpful to figure out your fat-burning zone to ensure that your workout is effective. Fat-burning zones differ with age, so it is best to use an equation to be as close to your fat-burning zone as possible.

Step 1

Subtract your age from the number 220.

Step 2

Take 60 percent of that number to find the lower end of your zone.

Step 3

Take 70 percent of that number to find the higher end of your zone.

Step 4

Record both numbers, and check your heart rate to ensure that you are within the zone during exercise.

Tips and Warnings

  • To check your heart rate, place your index finger and pointer finger next to your throat and along your windpipe. Count the beats per minute to find your exact heart rate. Check your heart rate at different points during your exercise routine to see how your body is progressing.
  • If at any point your heart rate increases to 160 and you feel lightheaded, slow your pace and focus on deep breathing. Consult a physician prior to commencing an exercise routine, and stretch before and after your workout.
