You may be worried about your husband, if he is overweight. When you look at him, you might wish he would drop those excess pounds. If he ignores your pleas and continues to scarf down high-calorie snacks and follow a sedentary lifestyle, you are not alone. Weight Watchers says that men are much less likely to embark on a weight loss program than women. However, you may be able to motivate your husband to lose weight if you do it in the right way.
Step 1
Ask your husband why he is reluctant to lose weight. You can shower him with reasons for why should do it, but Weight Watchers said he needs to make the decision on his own. If you find out what is stopping him, you can address those fears directly instead of using reasons that don't have any effect on him. This may help him build his own motivation.
Step 2
Praise your husband whenever you notice a healthy behavior or lifestyle change. Positive reinforcement will stroke his self-esteem, motivate him and make him more likely to repeat the behavior. Don't make a big deal out of it because you don't want to embarrass him. Say something simple like. "I noticed your snacking on fruit instead of candy. I'm really proud of you for eating something healthier."
Step 3
Offer support when your husband needs it. If he is having a rough time with his weight-loss program, don't lecture him or give him advice, as that may make him feel worse or put him on the defensive. Let him talk about his feelings and be a sympathetic, nonjudgmental listener. It will be easier for him to maintain his motivation if he knows he can count on you.
Step 4
Support your husband's diet by cooking healthy meals and keeping junk food out of the house. Weight Watchers says you might even want to join him by starting your own weight-loss program. If you do, be careful not to turn it into a competition. You should be mutually supportive instead of vying against each other.
