Most people start diets with all the motivation in the world. It's usually a few weeks in when that motivation begins to wane. To keep your head in the weight loss game, experiment with several strategies like rewards, support groups or goal clothes until you find one that works best for you. If you need motivation to get started in the first place, there are several tips that might help you jump-start your efforts.
Step 1
Got to the doctor. For some people, a high blood pressure reading or bad cholesterol test is what motivates them to lose weight. If your doctor is supporting your weight loss efforts and you know weight loss could improve your health, it could serve to motivate you.
Step 2
Write out your goals. Pen a letter to yourself explaining what you would like to achieve and how you'd like to achieve it. Post mark it for three months (or more) in the future and give it to a friend to mail at the specified time. This will help you avoid the disappointment of getting the letter only to find you haven't met any of your goals.
Step 3
Get your family involved. If your partner or children become committed to weight loss, their success and motivation can influence your success and motivation. Find a workout or diet buddy who you can check in with daily. Join online support groups, forums or groups that inspire you and help keep you accountable.
Step 4
Buy yourself rewards for each of your milestones. Buy yourself something nice or plan a vacation and use these as incentive to lose weight. Buy smaller items for weekly or monthly goals and larger items for milestone goals. Find an item of clothing in a smaller size and try it on periodically until it fits.
Step 5
Read success stories online. Seeing the achievements of others is good motivation to make you want to achieve your own goals. Look for people who have similar background and starting weights as you and see pictures of their triumphs see Resources). Print out the most inspirational one and tape it up where you will regularly see it.
