Is Exercise OK With Hemorrhoids?

Social convention has determined that mention of hemorrhoids is suitable only for sitcom laugh-lines, discrete commercials and discussions with you physician. Hemorrhoids are a fairly common medical disorder, however, and there should be no shame in having the condition. "CBS Money Watch" reports that hemorrhoids afflict half of all men by age 50. Hemorrhoids can create discomfort, but they generally shouldn't disrupt your lifestyle or stop you from exercising. On the contrary, exercise may be just what the doctor orders.

Background

Hemorrhoids occur when veins in, around or under the anus dilate from chronic pressure. They can be triggered or made worse by chronic diarrhea, heavy lifting or muscle strain that occurs when those with constipation apply pressure to evacuate their bowels. This area is the lowest point in the pulmonary system that carries blood from the liver to the heart, so gravity contributes to the pooling of blood and dilation of veins. With chronic pooling, the veins can lose their elasticity, and then tend to fail to move the blood along its route to your heart. The veins balloon, you squirm in discomfort and suddenly you've developed a hemorrhoids.

Symptoms

Hemorrhoids can develop internally, deep inside the anal passageway. These will usually be painless or create mild discomfort, though they may rupture and bleed. External hemorrhoids tend to be more painful. They appear as purple or dark red masses that develop at the rim of the anus. Though they are usually small, they can grow to be as large as a golf ball. Aside from pain or discomfort, the other noticeable symptoms can include discharge of red blood or mucus, tenderness, itching or a lump in the anus. If you have these symptoms, you should consult with your physician to rule out more severe rectal diseases.

Risk Factors

Hemorrhoids have a genetic component. Males are more vulnerable to hemorrhoids than females, and your risk increases as you age. Another important risk factor is physical activity. Those who are more active are less likely to develop hemorrhoids.

Exercise to Help

Certain types of exercise can help lower the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Exercise that increases blood flow and that enhances muscle tone reduces the risk of hemorrhoids. Increased circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients, strengthening the rectal veins and reducing the inflammation. Activities that enhance muscle tone include swimming, yoga, running, Pilates, aerobics, biking and walking. When you exercise, drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and provide liquid to enhance passing of food through the digestive system.

Activity to Avoid

If you have an inflamed hemorrhoid and activity worsens pain or discomfort, then avoid that activity. Do not perform activities that increase the pressure on the rectal region, such as bicycling. Also avoid activities that place pressure on the lower back such as weight lifting.
