Loestrin is a type of birth control pill. It works by preventing ovulation, and by making the cervical fluid and uterine lining less likely to allow sperm to reach the egg, or for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.
Types
There are two types of this drug. Loestrin contains ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone, which are hormones. Loestrin Fe contains these hormones plus iron.
Time Frame
Both types of Loestrin have a 28-day cycle. The original Loestrin contains 21 pills with hormones, and seven placebo pills. Loestrin Fe contains 24 pills with hormones, and four iron pills.
Benefits
Besides being 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, Loestrin Fe can make your periods lighter and shorter. Shorter periods, coupled with the iron pills, can reduce the risk of anemia.
Side Effects
Common mild side effects from taking this medication include breast tenderness, nausea and headache. Severe, rare side effects include stroke, heart attack and liver damage.
Considerations
Women who have had a blood clot, stroke, breast cancer or liver cancer should not take Loestrin. This medication should not be taken by breastfeeding mothers. Tell your doctor if you have had high blood pressure, depression or migraine headaches.
