Scabies, according to the Mayo Clinic, is an itchy skin condition caused by a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. The mite burrows into the skin, which causes severe itching and thin, tiny blisters or bumps where it has burrowed. Individuals with scabies often have the urge to scratch while in bed. The skin condition is contagious as it spreads via person-to-person contact. The skin condition is very treatable but the discomfort from itching may last for several weeks.
Step 1
Soak in a cool bathtub of water or apply a cool, wet washcloth to the affected area. The cool temperature will calm the skin irritation and slightly reduce itching.
Step 2
Apply Calamine lotion generously to all affected areas. Calamine is used to treat itching and irritation of the skin. Apply the lotion two to three times per day, especially before bed.
Step 3
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine to stop the itching you experience from the scabies rash.
Step 4
Use a prescription lotion on your body at least once per day. According to the Mayo Clinic, two commonly prescribed creams include permethrin and crotamiton. These creams eliminate the mites, but it may take several weeks. The cream must be left on the skin for eight hours at a minimum.
Tips and Warnings
- Home remedies will only work to soothe the itching and irritation caused by the scabies. Prescription treatment is necessary to kill the mites and prevent the spread of the skin condition to others and to other parts of your body. Wash bedding in hot water or use other sanitizing methods that are safe for your linens to kill off any mites or eggs.
- Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with other individuals until the mites have been killed through treatment. Treat everyone in your household to ensure the mites are completely gone from your home.
