A small volume nebulizer is a plastic or glass container in which liquid medication is placed and which is then inserted into a device that turns it into a fine mist. Medication that is administered in this manner can be inhaled deeply into the lungs, allowing it to be effective more quickly. According to the University of Wisconsin (UW), medication given in mist form has fewer side effects compared with medicines taken by mouth. With the proper equipment, using a small volume nebulizer can be simple.
Step 1
Wash your hands with soap and water. Ensure the surrounding area is clean or free of dust and pets. Choose an area that will be comfortable for the individual receiving the treatment to sit for 10 to 20 minutes. If the treatment is for a child, you may want to have toys nearby to keep him entertained.
Step 2
Place the air compressor on a stable surface. Plug the compressor into an electrical outlet. Connect the long, smooth tubing to the compressor. The tubing should be connected to a small, protruding dowel that is hollow. The air from the compressor will flow from the dowel and into the tubing. Connect the other end of the tubing to the nebulizer cup.
Step 3
Measure the medication according to the prescription directions. Pour the medication into the nebulizer cup. Add the saline as prescribed. Some medications do not require saline. Do not use it unless directed by your doctor to do so.
Step 4
Connect the mouthpiece and tubing to the T-piece. The T-piece is then snapped or twisted onto the nebulizer cup. Some models have a second piece of tubing that is connected from the mouthpiece to the nebulizer.
Step 5
Turn on the machine. Once a fine mist is visible the mouthpiece can be placed in the mouth. Take long, deep breaths during the treatment. It will last between 10 and 20 minutes.
Tips and Warnings
- Clean the mouthpiece and nebulizer cup after every treatment. Sanitize the parts once every other day with water and white vinegar, or a solution recommended by the manufacturer.
- Wash the nebulizer cup in between treatments to prevent incorrect doses of the medication from being administered.
