Winter sports can provide some of the best entertainment of all college sports. Fans have fallen in love with men's basketball, women's basketball and men's ice hockey. All of these sports offer full scholarships for athletes who qualify academically and athletically. Wrestling is another winter sport that offers scholarships for qualifying athletes.
Men's Basketball
Men's college basketball is the second-most popular collegiate sport, ranking behind football. In order to win a scholarship, you must attract the attention of college basketball head coaches. Most college basketball teams have an intricate scouting system that helps them find the right players for their program. However, if you are not a dominant scorer or you don't have size, you can still win a scholarship by writing letters to coaches, explaining why you would be a strong contributor to the team. Include a videotape with your highlights along with a letter validating your claims from your high school coach or other coaches in your area who have played against you. NCAA schools offer more than 7,000 scholarships for men's basketball.
Women's Basketball
Scholarships are plentiful in women's basketball. NCAA schools offer more than 9,000 scholarships each year for women basketball players. Scouting services almost always find the highest-profile players who lead their team in scoring and rebounding, but role players can win scholarships by making themselves known to college coaches. Videotaped highlights will document your ability.
Ice Hockey
While far fewer hockey-playing colleges exist, those that do offer scholarships. Schools in New England, the upper Midwest and other northern areas offer scholarships that result in full four-year rides. According to Athletic Scholarships.com, nearly 1,200 ice hockey scholarships are available annually. College coaches depend on scouts, videotape and other coaches to find scholarship-worthy players. Sending your own videotape will help as long as it documents your athletic ability.
Wrestling
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports. It was first documented in the ancient Greek Olympics and athletes have long admired athletes who pitted themselves against one another in a battle of strength. Nearly 1,200 wrestling scholarships are available from NCAA member institutions. Outstanding high school wrestlers often win their titles in state championships and these wrestlers have an outstanding chance to win a scholarship.
