How to Build a Pull-Up Bar at Home

Pull-ups provide one of the best all-around upper body muscle workouts. Gripping the bar then lifting yourself up works your hand and forearm muscles, your biceps and triceps and your shoulders. It strengthens your back muscles and works your abs. But is there a way to build a pull-up bar at home? The answer to that question is yes.

Step 1

Drill one hole, about 2 inches from each end of the four 10-foot, 6-by-2-inch wood planks. The holes on the top are to fit a heavy-duty pipe, while the holes on the bottom are to fit a machine bolt eye hook. You should now have four wood planks, each with a hole at each end.

Step 2

Insert a heavy-duty metal pipe with threaded ends through the top holes of all four planks. Screw threaded pipe caps onto both ends of the pipe.

Step 3

Spread your planks out so that each plank has about 1 foot of room on either side. Screw in the machine-bolt eye hooks into the bottom holes. You'll want the two eye hooks on the left to be facing each other (on the inside of the planks) and the two eye hooks on the right facing each other (also on the inside of the planks).

Step 4

Attach the carabiners to the machine-bolt eye hooks, then attach each end of the first light chain to the two left-most carabiners. Do the same with the other light chain, this time with the carabiners on the right.

Step 5

Slide your two left-most planks all the way to the left, then slide your two right-most planks to the right. Stand the planks right-way up so that the chains is on the bottom and the pull-up bar is on the top. Make sure the planks are extended so that the chain is taught.
