What Nutrients Are in Fruit Peels?

Fruits are foods loaded with antioxidants, dietary fiber and vitamins. The most nutritious part of fruits is often found in the skins and peels. However, the peel and skin of fruit is usually cut off and thrown away. To receive the health benefits of fruit peels and skins, add to salads, soups, main dishes, desserts and beverages when possible.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants provide protection to cells in the body from pathogens, toxins and free radicals. Eat fice servings of fruits and vegetables daily to reap the benefits of antioxidants. The antioxidant content in fruits lies within the peel and skin. Cranberries, blueberries and blackberries are three fruits with the richest source of antioxidants.

Fiber

Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet. The American Heart Association recommends at least 25 grams of dietary fiber daily. Fruit peels and skins are excellent sources of fiber. The benefits of fiber includes healthy gastrointestinal functioning, relief from constipation, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and prevents against cardiovascular disease.

Vitamins

Vitamins A and C are among the highest content in fruit peels and skins. Mangos, strawberries, oranges, kiwi and watermelon are full of vitamins A and C. Vitamin A plays a role in vision and development of teeth and bones. Vitamin C provides immunity against colds and diseases. The addition of fruits with its peels creates healthy side dishes such as salads, cocktails and desserts.
