Fatigue is more than just feeling sleepy. Fatigue is mainly characterized by a lack of energy and motivation, according to MedlinePlus, which can keep you from getting everyday tasks done and put a serious hamper on your lifestyle. If you experience fatigue on a regular basis, taking some simple steps can help put some zip in your step and get you back to living your life the way you want to.

Step 1

Get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night. Lack of a consistent, adequate sleep pattern can make you feel not just sleepy, but sluggish and fatigued during the day.

Step 2

Eat a well-balanced diet every day. Make sure you're getting 6 oz. of carbohydrates, 2 cups of fruits, 2.5 cups of vegetables, 3 cups of dairy and 5.5 oz. of meat and beans in your diet every day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Step 3

Take an adequate multivitamin, according to MedlinePlus. Consult your doctor for what type is best for you according to your body and any physical conditions you may have. Taking a multivitamin can help fill in any nutritional gaps in your diet that may be contributing to your fatigue.

Step 4

Avoid alcohol, drug use and excess caffeine. Using substances such as these can make you dependent on them, causing your body to feel fatigued when you don't use them.

Step 5

Exercise regularly. Regular exercise helps combat stress and fatigue and releases endorphins, which are "feel good" neurotransmitters, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 6

Talk to your doctor if you experience fatigue for more than two weeks, even after making lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise and getting more sleep. Your chronic fatigue could be a sign of a more serious condition.
