Wheelchair Basketball Drills

Wheelchair basketball has been an organized competitive sport since the late 1970s. The idea behind doing drills is to allow players to get used to the fundamentals of the game so they can compete more effectively on the court. The best and most effective drills concentrate on ball-handling, passing and shooting.

21 Up

In this drill, all players line up behind the free throw line. The first player in line moves to the free throw line. That player fires the ball off the backboard and then wheels around to the back of the line. The second player in line moves to the free throw line. He catches the ball and then fires the ball off the board. Continue in this manner until all players have caught and fired the ball at the backboard.

Think Fast Drill

In this drill, one player lines up at the free throw line and the rest of his teammates are lined up against the back wall. The player at the free throw line picks out a teammate and quickly throws the ball to him. The teammate throws it back at a fast pace. Then the player at the free throw line throws the ball to another teammate who also throws it back quickly. Have the player at the free throw line throw to all his teammates and all will have to throw it back. Then have a new player take over at the free throw line and continue the drill. Make sure all players get a chance to be the player who is passing the ball from the free throw line.

Retrieve The Ball

In this drill the coach will divide his team into two groups, positioning one to the right of the near basket and the other to the left of the near basket. On the coach's whistle, the player to the right of the basket will roll toward center court and pick up a ball that the coach has rolled there. He will then dribble to the far end and make a layup. Then the player in the left line will do the same thing. After making his layup, the player will switch lines. All players should make two layups from both lines.

Shark Drill

This is a drill to encourage defensive speed and tenacity. In this drill, one player is in the center circle and the other players are on the baseline. On the coach's whistle, the players on the baseline attempt to race to the opposite baseline. The shark in the middle of the court must tag one of her teammates. That teammate then joins her in the middle and they are both sharks. Then the coach blows the whistle and the players wheel back in the other direction while the sharks attempt to tag at least one player each. Keep going in this manner until all the players have been tagged.
