Skateboarders have been using public walkways to practice their favorite tricks since the invention of the skateboard. However, the results haven't always been positive when the walking public clashes with the skating public. Follow a few tips so you can ride your skateboard on public walkways -- sidewalks, stairs and passageways -- without irritating people around you or winding up with injuries.
Know the Law
Skateboarding on public walkways is illegal in many communities. Other communities permit skateboarding on public land only at specified locations or during certain times during the day or night. Skateboarding at locations or times when it is illegal can result in a fine. Make sure you know and obey your local laws.
Watch People
When skateboarding on public walkways where and when the activity is legal, you cannot be too self absorbed. You have to pay careful attention to other people who are also using the walkway. Also, be aware of people walking out of buildings and entering the walkway.
See Dangers
There may also be rocks, sticks or cracks in the concrete that can make it dangerous to skateboard on public walkways. Before skateboarding on public walkways, you may want to inspect for potential hazards. If you're skateboarding for a long distance and cannot inspect the entire walkway before setting off, be particularly careful to avoid anything that could cause your skateboard to stop and you to fly off of it.
Walk Away
Sometimes, skateboarding on a public walkway is not a good idea. If there are too many people using the walkway, or there are lots of potential dangers, pick up your skateboard and walk to your destination. Attempting to skateboard when it poses excessive risks for you or others can cause bodily harm or even cause your local governmental to consider banning skateboarding on public walkways.
