Stanley Burroughs created the Master Cleanse fast and promoted it with the release of his 1941 book "The Master Cleanser." The book promotes a detoxification fast that consists of drinking a mixture of organic lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water for 10 days. Burroughs claimed that the fast would help you shed pounds and detoxify your body of toxins. The Master Cleanse is an alternative diet, and you should always consult your doctor before making changes to your diet.
Step 1
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid processed food and meats three days before the cleanse. Eating raw foods will help you ease into the intensive cleanse.
Step 2
Prepare the mixture on the first day of the cleanse. Add 2 tbsp. of organic lemon juice to 8 oz. of water. Add 2 tbsp. of maple syrup and 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper. Prepare a serving of the mixture each time that you are hungry and drink through the day. Do not eat any solid food.
Step 3
Drink an herbal laxative tea each night to promote bowel movements. Health food stores often carry herbal laxative teas made from senna. Follow the directions on your particular brand of tea.
Step 4
Continue the Master Cleanse for 10 full days. Refrain from strenuous activity. Drink as much water as you desire while on the cleanse.
Step 5
Break the cleanse by slowly eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for three days. Continue to avoid processed foods and meat. Slowly add other foods after the third day.
