Herbal Magic is a line of natural nutritional supplements and weight loss products based in Canada. Although the company does not manufacture tea leaves or tea bags, a few of their products, including a Siberian ginseng herbal blend, may be dissolved and used as tea for the purpose of encouraging weight loss. Talk with your doctor before starting any new supplement regime.
Types
Herbal Magic offers a number of dietary supplements for weight control, health, energy, targeted therapy and nutrition. They include pills, powders and snacks. Many of the products are available only to patients who sign up for the Herbal Magic program, which includes a guided weight loss plan. Some of the company's most popular products are Siberian ginseng herbal supplement, weight management and metabolism tablets, probiotics and multivitamins. Another company, Celestial Seasonings, also produces a herbal tea called Mint Magic, which is not specifically tied to weight loss efforts.
Factors
Weight loss boils down to burning or saving more calories than you take in through food. Thus, reducing your daily calorie intake or burning more calories through physical activity will result in gradual weight loss; drinking tea does not have anything to do with the outcome and will not stimulate weight loss by itself.
Expert Insight
According to a 2010 study by researchers at Virginia Tech, overweight adults who drank two glasses of water prior to eating meals lost about 30 percent more weight over a 12-week period than those who went without the water. Both groups followed a low-calorie, balanced diet. The study results suggest that the water in any type of tea, rather than the tea itself, may assist with appetite suppression and help encourage weight loss.
Considerations
The National Institutes of Health's Medline Plus site states that the only safe, reliable and healthy way to lose weight and keep it off over time is to participate in regular physical activity and eat a balanced, low-calorie diet. The USDA's MyPyramid.gov recommends daily servings of vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy, lean proteins and whole grains but does not specifically call for tea to help with weight loss or health improvement.
Warning
The Herbal Magic website reports that the company's herbal weight loss products are 100 percent natural, and many of the products have Natural Product Numbers that are filed with the Natural Products Health Directorate of Canada. However, Herbal Magic also cautions that some supplements may negatively interact with prescription medications or other products. Thus, it's best to get approval from your physician before trying the supplements, taking any herbal tea for weight loss purposes or changing the way you eat.
