Wheatgrass is derived from the embryo of the common wheat plant. The seeds produce blades of grass that are potent with nutrients including chlorophyll, amino acids and enzymes. The health claims of wheatgrass are numerous, ranging from cancer prevention to overall detoxification of the body. Because grass cannot be digested by humans, the blades of grass must be juiced. This provides all the nutrients within the grass and immediate absorption into the body.
Growing the Wheatgrass
Step 1
Purchase a wheatgrass grow kit form from a natural or health food store. This will come with everything needed to grow wheatgrass from home, including seeds and a growing tray.
Step 2
Fill a bowl with seeds and rinse them with cold water. One rinsed and drained, cover the seeds with water and allow to soak for about 9 hours. After 9 hours, rinse and drain the seeds again, covering with water and being allowed to soak for another 9 hours. After 9 hours, rinse, drain, cover with water and let soak again for 9 hours. After this last soak, the seeds should have some sprouted roots showing.
Step 3
Line the bottom of the tray with paper towels. This will prevent the roots from protruding out the bottom holes of the tray. Spread an even layer of pre-moistened potting mix or compost in the tray, filling to about 1 1/2 from the top.
Step 4
Spread the germinated seeds evenly on the soil, pressing down gently to embed the seeds in the soil. Place the tray near a window or where it can get indirect sunlight, with proper ventilation.
Step 5
Water the young seeds twice a day with a spray bottle, keeping the soil moist but not soaking wet. When the shoots grow to be above an inch, cut down the watering to once a day, preferably in the morning.
Juicing the Wheatgrass
Step 1
Harvest the wheatgrass when it gets to be 8 or more inches tall by using a pair of scissors to cut the grass about an inch from the soil, or where the grass turns white. These shoots will begin to sprout new grass in around a week. Rinse the cut grass in cold water.
Step 2
Place a cup at the end of the spout of the juicer to catch juice. Sit the blades of grass in the mouth of the wheatgrass juicer and proceed to juice.
Step 3
Drink 1 to 2 oz. of wheatgrass juice daily. Wheatgrass juice is very powerful and detoxification reactions can occur in beginners who exceed the recommended daily intake.
