Glaucoma is an eye condition that occurs when you have a high intraocular pressure that slowly damages the optic nerve. Since your optic nerve transmits visual signals to your brain, damage to these nerve fibers will gradually result in loss of vision. Some people try alternative treatments, such as using cod liver oil in the treatment of glaucoma. Understanding the condition and the possible role of cod liver oil may help you determine the appropriate treatment for your eyes.

Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil contains omega-3, an essential fatty acid important to your development. This fatty acid may also help treat or prevent a number of health conditions, such as high cholesterol. Research does not link omega-3, or cod liver oil in particular, to the treatment of glaucoma. However, Gina White and Dr. Gary Heiting of All About Vision state that omega-3 may help the aqueous drain properly, reducing the risk of optic nerve damage from high eye pressures.

Eye Pressure

Aqueous fluid fills the area of your eyes just in front of the iris. Your eyes continuously produce aqueous, nourishing the tissues that make up the front chambers of the eyes. As fresh aqueous enters your eye, the older aqueous must drain out of the drainage angle located near the bottom of the iris. If the fluid does not leave at the same rate new aqueous enters the eye, you may experience high eye pressure.

Considerations

If you and your doctor determine that cod liver oil may aid in reducing your eye pressure, your doctor will discuss with you the dose you'll need. The dosage amount varies widely and also depends on any medications or supplements you take, as well as health conditions you may have. Omega-3 found in cod liver oil may affect anti-coagulant medications, putting you at a greater risk for bleeding. Diabetics must closely monitor blood sugar levels since omega-3 may affect blood glucose.

Warning

Prescription medications, typically in the form of eye drops, will effectively reduce your eye pressure. If your doctor prescribes medication for glaucoma, do not stop taking these medications to start omega-3 or other alternative therapies. A high eye pressure will continue to damage your optic nerve and result in permanent vision loss. Talk with your doctor about any supplements you plan to try, and she will help you formulate a way to use the supplements that will not put your vision at risk.
