Ping Golf is a privately owned company located in Phoenix, Arizona that has been in the golf business for many years. Callaway Golf is a public company located in Carlsbad, California that has been selling and manufacturing golf products for even longer than Ping. Both companies sell numerous golf-related products in addition to golf clubs, including golf balls, shoes, apparel and other miscellaneous equipment. Both companies also sponsor many professional golfers on all the major tours.
Iron Sets
Both the Callaway X18 and Ping G5 iron sets are available as either a 3-iron through pitching wedge set or a 5-iron through pitching wedge set. Both sets feature identical lofts for their long irons: the 3-irons have 21 degrees of loft, the 4-irons have 24 degrees of loft and the 5-irons have 27 degrees of loft. The lofts are increasingly higher on the Callaway X18 mid- and low-irons (by an average of 1 degree) when compared to the Ping G5 irons.
Ping G5
Ping Golf's G5 irons have traditional-looking clubheads with a dull-grey finish and lightweight steel or graphite shafts, depending on your preference. These clubs feature perimeter-weighted clubheads as a means to maintain distance control regardless of where you hit the ball on the clubface. The Ping G5 irons are available with a variety of different lie angles (evidenced by the various colored dots on each club), which allows you to customize the clubs for your swing. Special weighting technology also increases the clubs' moment of inertia, leading to an increase in average shot distance.
Callaway X18
Callaway Golf's X18 iron product line features a glossy, metallic-looking clubhead that is slightly larger than a traditional iron. The Callaway X18 irons feature numerous technologies to lower the club's center of gravity as a means to assist you in getting the ball off the ground or tee at impact. Perimeter weighting in each clubhead adds forgiveness to off-center hits and maintains a consistent distance average with each club. Callaway X18 irons are available with steel or graphite shafts.
Considerations
Speak to a licensed PGA teaching professional or clubmaker in order to receive a customized club fitting when purchasing your irons, so the clubs fit best with your swing. You can also alter your new clubs by choosing a different shaft flex or lie angle. In general, players with a mid-to-low handicap will benefit most from the Callaway X18 irons, while the Ping G5 irons are geared towards players of any talent level.
