A Comparison of Muscle Stimulators

Electrical muscle stimulators, or EMS, devices expose the muscles to electrical currents. A belt with electrodes is secured to the body and as the currents go through the skin, the muscles contract. Although EMS devices do not promise weight loss, they can temporarily tone and tighten the muscles in the body. Speak to your doctor before using a muscle stimulation product.

Benefits

The area of the body you wish to tone will affect your decision on what type of muscle stimulation device to purchase. A large number of the toners are made for the abs, including the Abtronic and the Flex Belt. However, the Slendertone Bottom Toner is placed around the buttocks to tighten and tone the behind. As long as the device can be secured to an area, it will work the muscles in that part of the body.

Prices

Compare prices of products since muscle stimulators are costly. You may consider using strength training exercise routines instead since you can achieve similar results. Along with strength training, remember to eat a reduced calorie diet and participate in daily cardio exercise to tone the body.

Effects

When comparing muscle stimulators, look for products that have undergone testing and have been proven to be effective. For instance, the Slendertone Bottom Toner was part of a 2010 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin. During the study, muscle strength and endurance was measured after six weeks of using the EMS device. The results showed that the device had the same effect on the muscles as performing 30 hamstring extensions for each leg at least five times per week. Strength and endurance levels were greater than the control group.

Considerations

Check the FDA website for any recalls or warnings issued to a manufacturer of an EMS device. The FDA has issued warnings to companies, like the makers of Abtronic for making false promises about their product. Currently, the Slendertone Flex Belt has met the regulations set forth by the FDA for over-the-counter EMS devices. Do not use EMS devices if you are pregnant or have an electronic implant, like a pacemaker.
