Human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, was first used for weight loss in the 1930s. HCG injections have recently become popular as a weight loss supplement.
Identification
HCG is a hormone derived from the urine of pregnant women. It is approved by the FDA as a fertility treatment.
Benefits
A.T.W Simeons, the first physician to use the shots and the 500-calorie-per-day diet, claimed his patients had smaller appetites, lost weight and lost inches on their hips and thighs.
Controversy
Although other doctors in the 1950s reported similar outcomes with the shots and diet, formal research has not shown that the shots work any better than a placebo.
Availability
HCG shots must be prescribed by a doctor but have become available online. A 500-calorie-a-day diet is recommended while using the shots.
Side Effects
Women who take HCG injections may be more likely to become pregnant. Other side effects include headache, depression and stomach pain.
