Cross country and downhill/alpine skiers seeking extra support can apply for grants related to competitive skiing. Some grants support individuals to compete and train, while others are intended for programs that host skiing competitions or develop young skiers' skill levels to help them become more competitive.
American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation Grants
The ABSF aims to promote cross-country skiing by awarding grants to a number of programs each year. Several types of grants are available from the ABSF, including the Young Skier Grants that support improvement or creation of youth skier programs, purchase of ski hats and uniforms to encourage development of team spirit, and scholarship programs to support young athletes interested in participating in youth ski organizations. Over 170 ski clubs and organizations across the United States have benefited from over $160,000 given away by the ABSF.
New Hampshire Skiing Grants for Young Racers
The Friends of New Hampshire Skiing grant program offers grants of $1,000. The grants aim to support the state's young boarders and skiers as they strive to become international champions and Olympic athletes. The grants are meant specifically for individuals who need help offsetting the costs of race training and traveling; college and intercollegiate athletes training for international races may apply. Athletes need a New Hampshire affiliation through residence, college or club; grants are based on need and past performance, as well as the athletes' ability to be in serious contention for elite teams. Friends of New Hampshire Skiing is the only program of its kind in the United States. The deadline to apply is November 30.
Far West Ski Association
Ski racers from California, Nevada, Washington and Oregon can apply for grants through the Far West Ski Association. These grants range from between $500 and $1,000 to cover training and competition fees. Those selected for grants should have excellent performance and potential as alpine ski racers.
Stacey Cook/Sun Valley Ski Tools Scholarship
This scholarship offers in-kind grants for young skiers, awarding $500 worth of ski tools and $500 worth of ski wax, enough for an entire alpine season. The scholarship recognizes a commitment to alpine skiing, talent, a good attitude and community involvement; athletes must be J2 or J3 level.
