A cycle ergometer is a stationary bike with a device that is capable of measuring the amount of work being performed. A speedometer is a simple ergometer. A breathing device that measures your oxygen uptake capabilities is a more complex ergometer. Hospitals, athletic centers and rehabilitation clinics use cycle ergometers to measure the fitness of an individual. They may monitor heart rate, oxygen uptake, blood pressure and pulse among other factors. The general population uses cycle ergometers for daily fitness. The consoles measure speed, pulse, calories burned and intensity level.
Step 1
Pull the seat adjustment knob out. Raise or lower the seat to the desired position. Release the knob. Sit on the seat and place your feet on the pedals. Rotate your right foot to the lowest pedal position. Your right leg should be almost straight with a slight bend in the knee. Readjust the seat if needed.
Step 2
Start pedaling. The console will turn on.
Step 3
Adjust the pedal resistance using the buttons on the console.
Step 4
Grab the pulse sensors on the handlebars. Hold the sensors until your heart rate appears in the console display.
Step 5
Monitor your speed, resistance level, calories and heart rate on the console.
