The stomach flu, also known as viral gastroenteritis, is a condition that affects the intestines. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping and fever. Infection often occurs via person-to person contact or after consuming a contaminated food or beverage. There is no cure for the stomach flu. However, proper nutrition while experiencing symptoms of the flu may aid in recovery.

Protein

Protein helps to keep the body strong during periods of good health and illness. The United States Department of Agriculture recommends men and women consume 56 and 46 g of protein per day respectively. Lean meat such as poultry or fish, soy, nuts, legumes, beans and eggs are good choices. Animal protein sources are also rich in vitamins B-6 and B-12, which may help to further boost the immune system.

Bland Foods

An upset stomach may require complete rest for the first few days of the stomach flu. Slowly add in bland foods to ease the stomach back into the digestion process. The B.R.A.T. diet is often used to treat symptoms of the flu. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast are foods that are low in fiber making them easily digested. Crackers, plain pasta and cooked cereal are also good options.

Drink Fluids

Dehydration is a common side effect of the flu. Both fluids and electrolytes are lost as a result of vomiting and diarrhea. During the early stages of the flu, drink between two and four ounces of fluids every thirty to sixty minutes. Excessive fluid intake may induce vomiting or worsen diarrhea. Ice chips, sport beverages and clear broth are good options. Avoid dairy products if they enhance symptoms of the flu.
