How to Eat While Doing a Colon Cleanse

Colon cleanses remove excess fecal matter from the colon. They are commonly prescribed in preparation for a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy to allow the physician to better visualize the colon. Food options are drastically limited while undergoing a colon cleanse. Failing to adhere to a colon cleanse-friendly diet can taint the results of your sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Therefore, it is essential that you only consume foods approved by your physician while undergoing your colon cleanse.

Step 1

Drink only clear liquids, such as broth, water, tea and clear juices. Opaque liquids travel more slowly through the gastrointestinal tract than clear liquids, increasing the likelihood that they would obstruct the view of the scope during your procedure.

Step 2

Eat only foods that would melt into clear liquids, such as popsicles or gelatin. These foods are allowed because they are solid forms of clear liquids. For example, if a popsicle were left out to melt, it would turn into a clear juice.

Step 3

Avoid red foods or drinks. The red color can temporarily stain the lining of your intestines, leading your physician to believe that you are bleeding when he reviews the findings of your sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.
