How to Get Fit for IVF

In vitro fertilization is a process in which a fertilized embryo is transferred to the uterus. IVF is a helpful procedure for women who have difficulties getting or staying pregnant. If you are about to go through an IVF cycle, your doctor may suggest that you lose weight to help increase your chances of a successful transfer. Follow a few easy steps to get fit and increase your chances of a positive outcome from IVF.

Step 1

Choose the healthiest foods possible when preparing for IVF. Keep your body healthy by consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. Aim for at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day. Add low-fat dairy foods to your diet to increase your calcium intake.

Step 2

Take daily vitamins that can improve your fertility and get you ready for IVF. Talk to your doctor about supplementing your diet with vitamins C, D and E as well as calcium and magnesium. Take a folic acid supplement daily to prepare your body for pregnancy.

Step 3

Exercise 30 minutes a day three or four times per week. Perform moderate exercise to increase your fertility and boost your chances of a successful IVF. If you are overweight, talk to your doctor about developing an exercise routine that can help you lose weight. By losing weight, you can increase your fertility. Aim for a healthy body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9.

Step 4

Avoid harmful substances such as alcohol, caffeine and nicotine to enhance your fertility and get your body healthy before IVF. Stop using any over-the-counter drugs, and ask your doctor about what prescription medicines are safe to take when preparing for IVF.

Step 5

Reduce stress in your life. Go get a massage or take a yoga class to unwind. Practice meditation and relaxation techniques to help calm your mind and body. Talk to your doctor about receiving acupuncture treatments to relieve stress and possibly boost your chances of a successful IVF cycle.
