Diet for Fatty Liver Diease

Fatty liver disease is a condition in which too much fat builds up in your liver. You are more at risk for fatty liver disease if you tend to put on weight around your middle, eat too much, especially too much fatty food, or drink too much alcohol, according to British Liver Trust. Ninety percent of heavy drinkers get a fatty liver, even if they are not overweight.

Lose Weight

If you're overweight or obese, follow a healthy weight loss plan aimed at promoting one to two pounds of weight loss per week, as reported in MayoClinic.com You should choose a healthy diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables. Reduce the amount of fat in your diet and choose small amounts of healthy unsaturated fats, such as those found in fish, olive oil and nuts. Include whole grains in your diet, such as whole grain breads, pasta and brown rice.

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Alcohol metabolism places extra stress on your liver. Alcohol is high in calories. A pint of beer contains around 300 calories, and a glass of wine has almost 200 calories. Drinking alcohol will make it harder for you to lose weight.

Lower Your Cholesterol and Triglycerides

Limit your intake of concentrated sweets such as cake, pie, candy, cookies and sugar-containing soft drinks. Reduce your total fat intake to no more than two or three tablespoons per day. This includes butter, margarine, oil, mayonnaise and salad dressing. Read food labels and choose low-fat alternatives.

Control Your Diabetes

Select more low-glycemic foods, which raise your blood sugar gradually, such as beans, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Cut back on high-glycemic foods, which raise your blood sugar quickly, such as white bread and white rice. You should try to eat meals and snacks on a consistent schedule. A registered dietitian can help you with a meal plan for diabetes, based on your food preferences.
