You may find times whether based on weather, injury recovery or time of day that you want to bring your bicycle indoors for exercise. This can be easily accomplished through the use of a bicycle trainer. A cycle trainer is a platform that supports your back wheel and allows you to pedal without forward movement. The trainers vary in the types of resistance they supply. An air trainer is the least expensive and uses a fan to apply increasing resistance as you pedal. A magnetic trainer can be adjusted to increase the intensity of your workout as you progress. A fluid trainer is the most expensive and provides uneven resistance, which is similar to the open road.

Step 1

Place your cycle trainer in an open area.

Step 2

Attach your rear wheel to the cycle trainer and position your front wheel straight for balance.

Step 3

Adjust the tension on the cycle trainer to the beginning resistance level.

Step 4

Get on your bike and begin your workout, changing the resistance on the magnets as needed, or increasing your speed to create additional resistance.

Tips and Warnings

  • Adjust the cycle trainer's resistance and your bicycle's gears until you find your desired training level. A consistent cadence will allow for a smoother transition between gears.
