1. Tell Me About It, Stud

Herpes is a type of virus that can cause sores and painful blisters, usually on the mouth or genital area. Herpes simplex 1 is commonly referred to as oral herpes or cold sores, which occur mainly on the face. They consist of small blisters, filled with clear fluid. Herpes simplex 2, or genital herpes, usually occur in the genital area, around the penis, buttocks, vagina and cervix.

2. Another Easily Spread STD

A person can easily transmit both types of herpes. Any direct contact with an infected person puts you at risk for getting the disease. This usually happens through sexual contact, whether it is intercourse or oral sex. Oral herpes and genital herpes are also both very easily spread during an outbreak, when sores are apparent on the person who is infected. It is important to avoid sharing drinks or food, kissing or using another person's lip balm during this time. However, it is important to also keep in mind that it is possible to still spread herpes when there aren't any physical symptoms.

3. It's More Common Than You Think

One out of every five adolescents and adults has herpes. Each year, between 200,000 and 500,000 people become infected with one of the two types of herpes. Genital herpes is more common in women than in men (one out of four women has herpes simplex 2 while only one out of every eight men has the disease). This is due to the theory that it is easier for a woman to become infected from a man, than it is for a man to get the disease from a woman. This is another good reason to always remember to use protection.

4. There is No Cure

Unfortunately, there is no vaccine or cure for either of the two types of herpes. Prescription medications like Zovirax, the brand name for acyclovir, helps decrease discomfort, and speed up the healing process. Famvir, and Valtrex, which are two commonly prescribed forms of famciclovir, can help reduce the number of outbreaks of genital herpes.

5. Soothe Herpes Pain

Over the counter medicines like Tylenol, Aspirin, and Motrin can help decrease the discomfort and pain of herpes. The use of room temperature wet cloths, placed directly on the sores, can also help. It is also important to keep the infected area clean and dry and if there is an outbreak in the genital area, the use of cotton underwear and loose clothing can increase your comfort.
