Arthritis is a disease characterized by joint pain and stiffness, according to MayoClinic.com. The pain associated with arthritis is caused by damage to the joints. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacks joints and inflames the soft tissue that lines the joint, causing swelling and pain.

Arnica Montana

Arnica Montana, also known as the arnica flower, is closely related to the sunflower in structure. Grown in Europe and the Western United States, the arnica flower has been used for medicinal purposes such as treating bruising and sprains, as well as stiffness, muscle soreness, pain and inflammation. In cases of skin inflammation, the arnica could be used topically; however, in a case of internal inflammation, as in with rheumatoid arthritis, the herb could be used to make tea.

Boswellia

Boswellia, more commonly referred to as frankincense, produces an anti inflammatory action in the body similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are sometimes prescribed to sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis. This herb is safer to use than the prescribed drugs because long term use does not lead to ulcers or irritation in the stomach. Boswellia is a herb that originates in India.

Devil's Claw

Devil's claw is a root that is either dried and broken down or grinded into a powder. Grown in South Africa, this root is normally used to treat pain and fever, but was used by Europeans to treat arthritis, according to Andrew Pacholyk, M.S., of Natural Holistic Health.

Licorice Root

Licorice root is an effective, natural anti-inflammatory that is common and sold in forms such as dried ''sticks'' of the root, a powder, capsules or as an extract. Originating in China, it is effective in reducing inflammation, though long term use may increase blood pressure and increase bodily potassium loss. This herb should be used only as a temporary relief of arthritis pain. Consult a nutritionist before using licorice root.

White Willow Bark

Originating from China, white willow bark is a natural and effective anti inflammatory and pain reliever. While the effects of this herb are known to be slow acting, Pacholyk suggests that the benefits last longer than common over the counter pills taken for inflammatory conditions.
