Fatigue has become a common complaint among men and women, which is not surprising considering the stressful times we live in. Fatigue is a feeling of exhaustion, tiredness and general lack of energy. It can be brought on by physical and emotional stress, lack of sleep, depression, poor diet and certain illnesses, such as those that compromise the immune system. Integrating certain ingredients into your diet can help combat fatigue.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a highly nutritious super-food that has many health benefits. Its high content of B-12, an important nutrient for energy, makes spirulina an excellent supplement for fatigue. It is also beneficial for weight loss, immunity, digestion and alkalizing the body. Spirulina is a blue-green algae and is recognized as one of the most complete food sources. It comes in powder, tablet or capsule and liquid form. The powder can be added to soups, salads and smoothies.
Ginseng
The ginseng root is widely used throughout the Orient for general weakness and increased energy. There are many different species of ginseng, with Panax being the most commonly used. Ginseng helps with fatigue in several ways: it contains many of the B vitamins, which help increase energy; it increases the use of fatty acids as an energy source. Ginseng comes in many forms: as a whole root, root pieces, granules, powder, capsules and liquid extract. It can be found in most health food stores and Asian markets. Always consult your health care practitioner before starting any herbal supplements.
Bee pollen
Bee pollen is a powder-like substance gathered by bees from flowering plants. Bee pollen is rich in nutrients, fatty acids, amino acids and vitamins, particularly the B vitamins that are known for their positive effect on energy levels. Pollen comes in granule form and is ultra effective when combined with a B-complex supplement. Take caution when supplementing with pollen; a small percentage of individuals may be allergic, especially those who are allergic to honey.
Considerations
Stress is one of the biggest causes of fatigue; therefore, it is beneficial to practice relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breathing. It is also important to get adequate sleep, regular exercise and to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Consult your health care practitioner before starting any supplements.
