The practice of applying acupuncture balls to the ear may help an overweight person control their eating habits. Acupressure is a form of acupuncture and is an ancient practice dating back thousands of years in Asia. Though the practice of acupuncture and acupressure can be used for many health problems and ailments, acupressure as a weight loss tool could help curb cravings for food.

Function

Acupressure is the practice of applying pressure to specific areas of the body to stimulate a desired reaction, based on the theory of acupuncture. While acupuncture uses thin, metallic needles to apply pressure on specific key points, acupressure uses small balls and beads to create the same effect through pressure. Auricular acupressure is a method for stimulating weight loss by stimulating the appetite control point on the ear. The tiny balls used to create pressure are usually held in place by tape to promote the desired result. The Holistic Online website suggests holding the appetite control point for at least three minutes to achieve this desired effect.

Features

Acupressure is an alternative treatment for conditions, varying from upset stomach to pain relief. When used to suppress the appetite, auricular acupressure can be used as needed when strong food cravings persist or on a regular basis from an alternative medical professional in a series of regular treatments. Acupressure can be practiced at home once properly trained by an acupuncturist.

Expert Insight

The Internet Health Library reports that a study was conducted at the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center Obesity Research Center in which no significant weight loss resulted between two groups in the study. One group wore an auricular acupressure device while the placebo group wore an acupressure device on the wrist. However, additional research conducted supports the contrary. "The American Journal of Chinese Medicine" reported a significant reduction in body mass index on 84 overweight adolescents who underwent auricular acupressure over an eight-week period.

Misconceptions

Although some research reports weight loss with auricular acupressure treatments, you should not rely on this practice as your sole method of weight loss. A well-balanced diet, one that is rich in a variety of high-fiber, low-fat foods and coupled with regular exercise and physical activity, is the best approach to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

Warning

Acupressure and acupuncture are forms of alternative medical techniques. Before beginning acupressure or acupuncture treatments, be sure to consult your physician or health care provider. If any unusual health conditions occur while undergoing acupressure or acupuncture treatments, contact your physician immediately.
