If you are new to skating, it is important to know the difference between Rollerblades and quad skates. While no particular type of skates is better or worse than the other, you need to understand preference and interest to choose the right pair of skates.

Design

Quad skates are designed for speed and agility, while Rollerblades are primarily made for speed. The wheels of quad skates touch more surface area of the floor, so it provides a better grip and more agility than Rollerblades.

Wheels

The wheels of Rollerblades are softer and thinner than quad skate wheels. Rollerblades can be used outdoors and indoors. Rollerblades usually have either four or five wheels per skate. Quad skates have four wheels per skate and the wheels are wider than those on Rollerblades. With quad skates, you have to change the wheels for indoor and outdoor skating.

Function

You can use both types of skates for speed skating as well as recreational rink skating. However, Rollerblades go faster than quad skates and are preferred for outdoor distance skating. Quad skates are more agile and better suited for sports like roller derby and artistic skating.

Benefits

Quad skates are easier to learn on, since the wheels are wider and they form a box-like pattern, thus ensuring that you fall less. Rollerblades are lighter and don't require a change in wheels. If you are a beginner, consider quad skates to learn on because they are heavier. Rollerblades usually are more difficult for beginners because the wheels are aligned in the center and in one line, requiring more balance.
