Ankle injuries are one of the most common injuries on the basketball court, according to the University of Vermont. Jumping, running and incidental contact in basketball increases the risk of ankle injuries, and players who have had previous ankle or leg injuries are at even more risk. Strengthening and balance exercises are one way to prevent ankle injuries. Another popular means of stabilizing ankles and preventing injuries are ankle braces. The type of ankle brace used by a player depends largely on personal preference.
Basketball Ankle Injuries
The stopping, shooting, cutting, jumping and running that occurs during a basketball game occurs on a hard floor, which places a tremendous amount of stress on the ankle, according to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. Injuries in basketball can be traumatic or chronic. Traumatic injuries occur as the result of a sudden blow or fall. A chronic injury develops slowly and becomes aggravated as a player continues to play on it. Injuries also can be the result of poor warm-ups, poor conditioning, ill-fitting shoes and biomechanical deformities. Injuries can include sprains, torn ligaments, tendon ruptures, fractures and tendinitis.
Injury Prevention
Unfortunately, collisions and other traumatic injuries cannot be prevented. Chronic and overuse injuries can be prevented with proper conditioning and appropriate footwear, according to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. Basketball shoes should have plenty of ankle support as well as shock absorption. High-top shoes also can be more supportive and are recommended by many podiatrists. Shoes should fit appropriately and be replaced when worn.
Bracing
Ankle braces are often beneficial for players who suffer from chronic ankle injuries and conditions. Players who find themselves with a severe or chronic ankle injury often sport ankle braces for the remainder of their careers. Ankle braces help to better support the weight of your body and place less stress on the ankle. Injured players often are able to return to the game more quickly with the use of an ankle brace.
Types of Braces
Ankle braces can range in price from $20 to upwards of $80. They come in a variety of materials and support levels. Mild ankle bracing can be as simple as using an elastic bandage or athletic tape. For more chronic ankle conditions or for basketball players making a return from a serious ankle injury, it is recommended that you pay a visit to your physician. A physician can give you an exact diagnosis as well as advise you on the type of ankle brace that is best for your condition. Physicians also can advise you on where to buy an ankle brace.
Ankle braces can have laces, use Velcro with laces, or be made of a stretchy material. Lace-up braces often last longer but can come untied or require that you frequently adjust the Velcro. Stretchy braces are not adjustable and provide a tighter fit, but might not be as comfortable. Choosing a brace depends largely on your injury and how comfortable you are with each type of brace.
