There are four main types of inline skates: recreational, hockey, aggressive and speed. Finding the best rated skate in each category can be a challenge, but there are certain features you should look for in a superior skate. And as with most top-rated products, the best inline skates will usually carry a higher price tag due to the fact they are made with better quality materials and more precise engineering.

Recreational

The most widely available inline skates are called recreational skates, which includes fitness skates. The best rated models typically run $150 or more per pair, according to 2010 prices. The boot is made from a comfortable, breathable material and has plenty of padding and ankle support. It will also feature an open-shell design to provide support while at the same time allow air to flow to your feet to keep them cool. The top manufacturers of recreational skates include K2, Rollerblade, Bladerunner and Roller Derby.

Hockey

Inline hockey skates are nearly identical to ice hockey skates with the obvious difference of having wheels rather than a blade. The best rated skates can top $600 or more in price, but many moderately-priced skates in the $200 range are rated high by roller hockey players as well. The key things to look for in a top roller hockey skate include a stiff yet comfortable boot, lightweight design, metal chassis, high-quality wheels with at least ABEC 7 bearings --- ABEC 9 is the best and highest rating for bearings. The top inline hockey skate manufacturers include Bauer, CCM, Mission, Reebok, Tour and Easton.

Aggressive

Aggressive inline skates are ideal for freestyle and street use. They are designed to withstand the bumps and bruises associated with rail slides, grinds and jumps. The best aggressive skates have a tough, durable shell made from hard plastic materials or composites. The boot should fit comfortably and provide plenty of ankle support. The chassis on top-rated aggressive skates is made from aluminum, titanium alloy, magnesium or other tough and lightweight metals; avoid plastic frames. The wheels will measure about 55 mm to 60 mm and be hard enough for street use --- 84A or higher is ideal. A few of the top aggressive skate manufacturers include Valo, Remz, Roces, Razor and K2.

Speed Skates

As the name implies, speed skates are designed for speed. They feature longer wheel bases with between four and six wheels. The wheel diameter is also larger than other types of inline skates, often exceeding 100 mm. The boot of the top-rated speed skates is form-fitting and made from lightweight composite materials, such as carbon fiber. The chassis is also lightweight and durable, made from magnesium or metal alloy. The top speed skates are manufactured by Luigino, Bont and Powerslide.
