Joseph Pilates invented many pieces of specialized exercise equipment, including several models of Pilates chairs and the reformer, to assist his clients in achieving better health and fitness levels, according to master Pilates teacher Romana Kryzanowska. Several sporting goods manufacturers distribute both pieces, yet there are key differences that you should consider when choosing between the two.
Chair
The Pilates chairs enable you to perform dozens of Pilates exercises using a spring-weighted pedal. The Wunda chair model looks like a padded stool, while the electric chair has a higher seat with a back. You can adjust the resistance settings on either model by adding or removing springs as you change exercises or positions.
Performer
The Performer, manufactured by Stamina Products, is a home version of Joseph Pilates' reformer apparatus, according to the company website. This piece of Pilates equipment uses four adjustable bungee cords for resistance. The Performer has a large bed that you can lie down on for supine exercises, or use in seated or kneeling positions.
Similarities
The chairs and Performer share many Pilates exercises such as footwork, pike and tendon stretch, according to Kryzanowska. Both machines allow you to adjust the spring weights to accommodate your conditioning level. You can also use both machines in several different positions, including supine, prone, standing or sitting. You can find several model options of Pilates Performers and chairs for home use.
Differences
The chair is for more advanced Pilates students because it offers less support, while the Performer literally has a bed to lie upon, according to Kryzanowska. Footwork on the chair requires you to sit upright and stabilize your spine, while footwork on the Performer is done while lying flat on your back. The chair takes only the space of a dining chair, while the Performer is closer in size to a child's crib. Stamina Products reports that the Performer is not intended for commercial use, while several models of Wunda and electric chairs are available for use in Pilates studios.
Considerations
Although Pilates hoped to see his Wunda chair in people's homes -- he developed it for home use -- he expected students to study with a trained professional to learn how perform the exercises correctly, says Kryzanowska. Many Pilates teachers learn reformer exercises before they learn their chair equivalents, so it may be easier to find assistance for a Performer than for a chair, she notes.
