Yoga provides an excellent form of physical fitness, but it helps alleviate stress, and for many, provides a spiritual path. There are almost as many kinds of props and equipment that can be used to enhance practice as there are forms of yoga itself. From Ashtanga to Vinyasa, each form incorporates different props to help the individual practitioner progress in their asana practice.
Sticky Mats
The sticky mat is an essential part of any yoga practice. Yoga mats are typically made of rubber or latex (although non-latex mats are available), and provide a tacky surface that prevents slipping and sliding during practice. It also provides a little padding for the hands and knees. These mats are available at most sporting good stores or online, and cost anywhere from $10 to $60, depending on the brand.
Yoga Blocks
Yoga blocks are light-weight rectangular foam blocks used to give extra support in certain yoga postures. When placed on the floor next to the body during a lunge or triangle pose, they assist practitioners with tight hamstrings or a shorter reach. Yoga instructors can often find creative ways to incorporate yoga blocks into a session. One or two blocks is a must-have prop for most beginners. They cost anywhere from $12 to $30, and can be purchased singly or as part of a beginner yoga kit.
Yoga Straps
Yoga straps are also found in many beginner yoga kits. They help beginners extend their reach, and can also assist more flexible practitioners to deepen a stretch. They can even be used in restorative poses to lend extra support and allow the body to relax more into the pose. Straps are either cotton or nylon, and are one of the least expensive yoga props to buy. They begin at around $10.
Bolsters
A bolster is a nice prop to use for relaxation poses and other supine poses, and can also provide extra support during pregnancy. Although not considered an essential prop for yoga, they can add to any practice by making certain poses more comfortable. Bolsters are firm, round cushions that come in a variety of sizes. They cost anywhere from $55 to $95 for a nice bolster.
Yoga Balls
Yoga balls, or fitness balls are large rubber balls used to build muscle and flexibility. In yoga, they can be used to help develop balance and strengthen core muscles. They can provide support for back bends, and help increase flexibility of the the spine. Since these balls are used in other forms of fitness, they can be purchased just about anywhere. At an affordable starting price of about $15, they make a nice addition to a yoga equipment collection.
Meditation Cushions
Meditation cushions are extremely helpful to ensure proper alignment of the spine during sitting positions and meditation. Unlike an ordinary cushion or pillow, meditation cushions (also known as zafus) are designed to tilt the pelvis forward when sitting, and encourage the natural curve of the spine and so that one can sit upright properly. A good zafu will help the practitioner to sit comfortably for longer periods of time. The cushion should be thick and firm, and will cost around $30 to $50.
