Vitamin B12 Toxicity Symptoms

Vitamin B12, which is also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin required for certain biological processes in the body. People generally obtain enough vitamin B12 in their diet, however some people need to take vitamin B12 supplements to avoid deficiency or to treat certain conditions. Toxicity from overdosing on vitamin B12 is rare, because excess amounts of the vitamin are either not absorbed by the body or easily flushed from the system. However, in certain individuals vitamin B12 can cause adverse effects.

In very rare cases, vitamin B12 can case a severe allergic reaction. If you develop swelling of the face, mouth or throat or have difficultly breathing after taking vitamin B12, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Side Effects

Taking vitamin B12 supplements may occasionally cause mild side effects. Reported side effects from oral vitamin B12 supplements include dry, itchy skin, blood clots and diarrhea. People using topical vitamin B12 for psoriasis have also reported mild itching as a side effect.

Drug Interactions

Several medications and health supplements decrease absorption of vitamin B12 in the body and can contribute to vitamin B12 deficiency. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections that can inhibit the ability of vitamin B12 to promote new cell growth, explains Medline Plus. Vitamin C, potassium and folic acid are vitamins and minerals present in many health supplements that can decrease the effectiveness of vitamin B12 supplements.
