The 200-meter dash is a track event that dates back to the first Olympic games that took place in Greece 776 B.C. The world record holder for the men's fastest 200 meter dash is Usain Bolt from Jamaica, and the women's world record holder is Florence Griffith-Joyner from the U.S., as of 2010.

Men's World Record

The world's fastest 200 meter dash outdoor record was broken at the 2008 Summer Olympics by Bolt. His time was 19.30 seconds, breaking the former 12-year record of 19.32 seconds held by Michael Johnson. Bolt broke the world record in the 100 and 200 at the same Olympics, which has never occurred before in Olympic history. He also became the first man to double in the 100 and 200 sprinting events since the 1984 Olympics.

Women's World Record

The women's world outdoor record holder for the 200 meter dash is American, Florence Griffith-Joyner with a time of 21.34 seconds. In the 1988 Summer Olympics that took place in Seoul, South Korea, she won a total of three gold medals -- in the 100-, 200- and 4X100-meter dashes; along with the gold medal in the 200-meter dash she also became the world record holder.

Men's Collegiate And High School World Records

The men's collegiate record for the 200 is held by Walter Dix, from Florida State University, at a time of 19.69 seconds in 2007. The men's high school record is held by Roy Martin, with the time of 20.13 seconds in 1985.

Women's Collegiate And High School World Records

The women's collegiate record in the 200 is held by Dawn Sowell from Louisiana State University in 1989 with the time of 22.04 seconds. The women's high school record is held by Allyson Felix with a time of 22.11 seconds in 2003.
