Losing weight can be a difficult process, but many products on the market are designed to help you shed pounds more rapidly. One of these is the sweat suit or sauna suit. It is usually made of plastic or fabric with a plastic or rubber liner to help retain body heat and increase sweating. While the sweat suit is designed to help you lose weight by decreasing body fat, it mainly decreases body weight by eliminating fluid from your body.

Step 1

Select a sweat suit that fits. Most sweat suits come in the basic small, medium, large and extra large sizes. Choose a sweat suit that is slightly large if you are between sizes. The larger suit will give you ample room to move which will allow you to have a more active workout without worrying about tearing the material of the suit.

Step 2

Put the sweat suit on before you start exercising. If your sweat suit has velcro or elastic bands to tighten the suit around your wrists and ankles, make sure you tighten them to fit snugly to your body before you start exercising. The suit is designed to hold in all body heat, so the more tightly the suit fits to your body, the more effective it will be.

Step 3

Carry a large bottle of water with you while you work out in the sweat suit. Since you will be sweating quite a bit, you will need to make sure you keep your body hydrated to avoid dehydration. You are more likely to become dehydrated in hot or humid conditions -- similar to the conditions inside the suit -- because they force your body to sweat more, losing more water.

Step 4

Exercise in the sweat suit frequently. Populations in tropical climates have a resting metabolic rate 5 to 15 percent higher than people in cooler climates because their bodies adapt to the hot temperatures. A 1998 study at the Defense and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine in Ontario, Canada tested the effects of aerobic fitness, short-term heat acclimation and hypohydration on exercise. The study concluded that short-term heat acclimation did not influence the exercise-heat tolerance, but the tolerance was significantly improved by long-term aerobic fitness. Therefore, the more often you work out in the suit, the more your body will acclimate to exercising in hot conditions and will start conditioning itself to use fat as fuel.

Step 5

Rinse out the sweat suit after each use. Sweat contains quite a few toxins from the body, so it is a good idea to turn the sweat suit out and rinse it in water after each use to remove any excess sweat and waste products from the lining. You can rinse the suit easily in the shower or bathtub and hang it to air dry before wearing the suit again.
