Paxil controlled-release, or Paxil CR, is the brand name for paroxetine. It is a prescription-only drug that is used to treat various mental health disorders.
Function
Paxil CR is used to treat depression, panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which helps balance the amount of serotonin, a mood-enhancing neurotransmitter, in the brain.
Dosage
The initial starting dose for adults of Paxil CR is 25mg daily for depression; 12.5mg daily for panic disorder; and 12.5 mg daily for social anxiety disorder. Depending on the person's response, the dosage may be increased to a maximum daily dose of 62.5mg, 75mg, and 37.5mg, respectively.
Time Frame
This medication is taken once daily in the morning, with or without food. The pills should not be crushed or chewed; they should be swallowed whole.
Side Effects
Side effects of Paxil CR may include sleepiness, insomnia, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, stomach upset, back pain, decreased libido, and increased urination.
Considerations
In some individuals, especially teenagers and young adults, antidepressants may cause an increase in suicidal thoughts or actions. Because depression and other mental health disorders may also cause an increase in these thoughts, it is best to talk with your doctor to assess the risks and benefits of taking this medication.
Warning
Tell your doctor about any medications, both over the counter and prescription, that you are taking, to avoid possible drug interactions. You should not take Paxil if you are taking an antidepressant in the MAOI class, if you are allergic to an ingredient in Paxil CR, or if you have taken St John's Wort in the past 14 days. Talk to your doctor about any other medical conditions you have, or if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
