Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a medical disorder of the large intestine. Symptoms include a change in bowel regularity, cramping, bloating, and constipation, diarrhea or both. According to MedlinePlus, diet can help you control IBS symptoms. Certain herbs may be useful in relieving or controlling symptoms. However, herbal supplements should not take the place of other forms of treatment. Always consult your physician before using any alternative remedy to treat a serious health condition.
Peppermint
The herb peppermint may help ease symptoms of IBS. According to the Mayo Clinic, peppermint may help control spasms of the smooth muscles in your intestines, and ease bloating and cramping. However, research is inconclusive, and peppermint may worsen other digestive conditions, such as heartburn. Consult a doctor before taking peppermint for IBS.
Senna
The herbal supplement senna may be useful for treating constipation, a symptom associated with IBS. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 300 mg of senna taken once a day may trigger the muscles of the colon to move, causing a bowel movement. Use senna in conjunction with medications, as it should not replace other forms of treatment.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a standardized Chinese herbal extract that contains 20 different herbs may reduce symptoms of IBS. This remedy includes herbs ginger, dan shen and wormwood. Consult your doctor before starting this herbal treatment.
