Children's inline skates are much more affordable than adults', but they are available for a variety of purposes and skill levels. While Rollerblade and K2 brands dominate the adult market, other brands such as Roller Derby and Razors make a solid standing in the kids' field. If you are trying to determine which of these will best suit your child, knowing how the skates will be used and how well your child skates will help narrow your search.

Recreational

Rollerblade Spitfire skates for boys offer ease of control and maneuverability with 72 mm/80A wheels, and three mechanisms to hold the foot tight in place. At a retail price of $110 as of 2011, they may seem expensive for recreational use, but adjustable straps allow them to grow up to 4 sizes as your child's foot grows.

The Bladerunner Phaser girls' skate is similar to the Rollerblade Spitfire but with a different braking system. Retailing at only $80, this option also expands up to 4 sizes so you get your money's worth even through growth spurts.

Aggressive

For the stunt devil in your family, Razors Genesys Kids' Aggressive Skates are a popular choice. With 56 mm wheels and a shock absorbing heel pad, these skates are designed for the beginning to advanced intermediate skater who performs jumps, stunts and tricks. At $110 as of 2011, the skate can adjust in size as your child's foot does.

Hockey

Mission, Reebok and Tour dominate the kids' roller hockey category, with prices of $70 to $400 as of 2011. However, a lesser known company, Sure-Grip International, offers a highly rated affordable hockey skate called Sure-Grip FLITE All-Stars junior inline hockey skates. With a retail price of $69, these skates can often be found at a sale price of only $39. The support and firm grip they provide will allow your little one to test out the sport of hockey for the first time without breaking the bank.

Race

If your child races, you can expect to pay more for an appropriate skate. Tour 800 junior race skates are available in girls' and boys' versions, with 80 mm speed wheels intended to help your child reach maximum speeds in indoor competitions to beat their opponents. They retail at $280, as of 2011. About $50 cheaper, the Luigino Mini-Challenge Adjustable Skate can accommodate up to four sizes with the same skate. With 84 mm Z wheels and ABEC 7 brakes, these skates are a slight step down in speed but will last your child much longer.
