Vaginal yeast infections are a common health problem in women. The website Womens Health states that approximately 75 percent of women have at least one yeast infection at some point in their lives. Yeast is a type of fungus, and yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of Candida albicans in your vagina. If you are thinking of using herbs to help control your yeast infection, first talk with your doctor about procedures, alternatives and risks.

Yeast Infections

MedlinePlus states that yeast, or Candida, is a fungus that is normally present in small amounts in your body, including your vagina. Vaginal itching is one of the most common signs and symptoms of a yeast infection. Other common indications that you may have a yeast infection include redness, swelling and burning of your vagina, pain with urination, painful intercourse and vaginal discharge. Yeast infections range from mild to severe. Stress, poor diet and certain illnesses may cause yeast infections.

Useful Herbs

Several herbs may be useful in treating your vaginal yeast infection. According to naturopath Dr. Sharol Tilgner, an expert in herbal medicine and author of "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," certain herbs possess anti-fungal action and help improve the health of your immune system -- two important treatment goals to help treat your vaginal yeast infection. Herbs that may help treat your yeast infection include lomatium, Oregon grape, thyme, usnea, paracress and pau d'arco.

A Commonly Used Herb

Oregon grape is a commonly used herb in the treatment of yeast infections. Oregon grape is both an anti-fungal agent and an immune system modulating agent. The University of Michigan Health System notes that Oregon grape contains an alkaloid called berberine shown to combat bacteria, yeast and other microorganisms. Oregon grape is a plant commonly found in the American Pacific Northwest region. Oregon grape may help treat chronic candidiasis, parasites and urinary tract infections.
