Triathlons are sporting competitions that are divided into three sections: running, biking and swimming. Children and adults alike compete in triathlons. Although specific attire is not generally required, triathlon suits can be beneficial. Children's triathlon suits are very similar to those of adults and can make transitioning from one event to the next easy and efficient.

Design

As with adult triathlon suits, there are several designs for triathlon suits for kids. Full body triathlon suits are a simple option that can be worn throughout all three events. They are generally one-piece, sleeveless, zip-front suits that hit just above the knee. Two-piece short and tank combinations are also available. These generally consist of shorts that are similar to bike shorts --- again hitting just above the knee --- and a sleeveless tank. Swimsuit-only suits can also be worn.

Material

Triathlon suits, regardless of design, are made of versatile materials that allow for efficient transitions between events. Suits are made of breathable fabric that allows for moisture wicking, and many possess breathable panels that aid in the process. The fabric is also waterproof, allowing it to be worn during swimming events. The material dries quickly to help prevent chafing and irritation.

Choosing a Suit

Suits should be chosen based on the comfort level of the specific child and the climate of the event the child will be participating in. As with adults, children will most likely have a preference as to whether they prefer a one- or two-piece suit. Full-coverage suits and wetsuits should be considered if the weather is cold or if swimming will take place in open water that could be chilly.

Cost

Although the assumption may be that children's triathlon suits would be significantly cheaper than adult suits due to sizing, this is hardly the case. Due to the quality of the material with which they are constructed, children's triathlon suits are fairly expensive. Prices can vary from $70 to $150 as of January 2011, depending on the brand and type of suit chosen.
