The Spirit Squad, a male cheerleader-themed stable in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2006, became an important part of the organization in a short period of time. Over the course of that year, the group feuded with notable WWE stars like Degeneration X (DX) and Ric Flair, making it disliked by many fans around the world. Eventually, the group disbanded after its feud with Degeneration X, but many fans remember this gimmick.
Members
The Spirit Squad, a five-person faction made up of Kenny, Johnny, Mikey, Nicky, and Mitch, used a male cheerleader gimmick. This means that they would come to the ring and recite rehearsed cheers about other competitors to heat up the crowd. The group ganged up on outnumbered opponents and won matches through dishonest methods.
Debut
After their recall from the WWE's developmental territory, the Spirit Squad quickly made an impact by interfering in a Royal Rumble qualifying match between the Coach and Jerry Lawler, causing the Coach to win. This January 23, 2006 match eventually led to the Spirit Squad facing Shawn Michaels in a handicap match and then joining up with the McMahon family and attacking Michaels upon completion of the match. This alliance with the McMahon family continued for months, as the McMahon family frequently used the Spirit Squad to attack other wrestlers.
Feud with DX
The fans had not seen Degeneration X together for years, but June 12, 2006 signaled the reformation of the group when the Spirit Squad attacked HHH. Shawn Michaels ran to the ring to save HHH from the beating and that the pair did the DX crotch-chop after the segment to signify that they had reunited. This led to a series of matches between the two sides, culminating with a match in which Degeneration X and Ric Flair defeated the Spirit Squad.
Tag Team Championship Run
Perhaps the most important moment in Spirit Squad history came at WrestleMania 22, when the group won the WWE tag team championship. The Spirit Squad defeated Kane and Big Show to win the titles, when all five members of the group ganged up on the champions, taking advantage of an unconscious referee. They held the titles until November 5, 2006, when they lost to the team of Ric Flair and Rowdy Roddy Piper.
