Your kidneys are paired organs that perform many important functions within your body. One of the primary functions of your kidneys is to filter blood. Most people with reduced kidney function have some sort of progressive kidney disease. Certain herbs may help boost your kidney function, but you should always check with your physician before using substances, including herbs, to improve the health and function of your kidneys.
Kidney Function
Although a family history of kidney problems increases your risk for kidney disease and reduced kidney function, other possible causes of a low-functioning kidney include diabetic kidney disease, elevated blood pressure, glomerular disease, poisons and physical injury. According to the National Kidney Foundation, if you are of advanced age or have diabetes or hypertension, and if you are African American, Hispanic American, Asian American or Native American, you may have a greater chance of developing kidney disease and reduced kidney function.
Helpful Herbs
Certain herbs are known for their ability to improve the health and function of your kidneys. Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno Jr., a naturopathic physician and author of "The Clinician's Handbook of Natural Medicine," states that the following herbs may be helpful in preventing kidney stones: uva ursi, corn silk, gravel root, horsetail, mullein and buchu. Herbs that support the general functioning of your kidneys include ginkgo, sage, ginseng, rhubarb and astragalus. Milk thistle, dandelion and cayenne are sometimes used as adjunct herbal therapies.
Featured Remedy
Astragalus is an herb that is often used to improve the health and function of your kidneys. The root of the astragalus plant, notes the National Institute of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, is used medicinally and may be ingested via soups, teas, extracts or capsules. Astragalus has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and adaptogenic action; helps encourage tissue regeneration; and protects the function of your kidneys. Astragalus contains saponins and polysaccharides -- two of its most significant active constituents.
Considerations
Consider thoroughly researching herbal remedies before taking herbs to improve your kidney function. Some herbs may cause serious side effects if they are not taken properly. A qualified health care professional can help you determine which herbs may be best for you, what side effects you might experience and how long you should take the herb. A botanically trained health care professional may also suggest taking a combination of herbs, or herbal formula, for best effects.
