The Master Cleanse is a 10-day fasting diet designed to help you release unwanted toxins in the body as well as lose weight. The Master Cleanse was promoted by Stanley Burroughs, an alternative health practitioner, with the publication of his book "The Master Cleanser." The cleanse advocates drinking a lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup drink daily without the addition of any solid foods for 10 days. Always consult with your doctor before following any diet program.

Step 1

Follow a pre-cleansing diet for three days. Consume fresh raw fruits and vegetables. Avoid processed foods, such as dairy, meat or junk food. This will help you transition to the fasting phase of the diet more easily.

Step 2

Prepare the Master Cleanse drink by adding 2 tbsp. of fresh lemon juice, 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 2 tbsp of grade B maple syrup to 8 oz. of water. Prepare and drink this mixture throughout the day for 10 days, whenever you are hungry.

Step 3

Drink a cup of laxative tea each night before going to bed. Burroughs claims that the fast will help you detoxify best when you continue to have bowel movements. Senna tea is the most common laxative tea and is available at most health food stores.

Step 4

Continue to drink filtered water each day. Drink 8 oz. of water for each serving of the lemonade mixture that you drink.

Step 5

Break the cleanse by slowing eating fresh fruits and vegetables for three days. Take your time in adjusting to solid foods. After three days, slowly add back other foods and continue to avoid processed foods as much as possible.
