The Giant Bicycle Company manufactures road bikes, sport bikes and mountain bikes in men, women and youth styles. Features include multi-speed drive train with rear cassette sprocket and derailleur. Depending on the model, front and rear brakes are rotor disc or side-pull caliper. Giant's designers have eliminated axle nuts in favor of quick release levers for easier changing of tubeless and tubular tires. Backing the brake cable tension off at the hand lever and spreading the brake arms is all that's necessary to remove a front tire. Disconnecting the shift cable at the derailleur and removing the chain allows the rear tire to be removed.
Step 1
Remove the valve stem cap on the tubeless or tubular tire. Fully deflate the tire by lightly pressing the head of a tire gauge on the valve stem and allowing the air to escape.
Step 2
Squeeze the sidewalls of the tire at several places around the wheel to unseat the tire beads from the wheel rim. Place the wheel on the floor. Place a rear wheel on the floor with the cassette sprocket facing up to prevent damaging the cassette.
Step 3
Insert the flat end of one tire lever between the upper bead of the tire and the wheel rim. Press down on the end of the lever to lift that portion of the bead above the rim. Insert the other lever between the bead and the rim several inches to one side of the first lever. Press down on the handle to lift another portion of the upper bead above the rim.
Step 4
Grip the portion of the upper bead between the tire levers with one hand. Pull the bead away from the rim. Continue to pull the bead away by hand as you work around the rim. Pull the inner tube out of a tubular tire.
Step 5
Insert a tire lever between the lower bead of the tire and the upper side of the wheel rim. Press down on the lever and lift the bead over the upper side of the rim. Grip the lower bead with one hand and pull it away from the rim to remove the tire.
Step 6
Wet the inner and outer surfaces of the new tire beads using a soft bristle brush and soapy water. Place the new tire atop the wheel rim. Squeeze the sidewalls of the tire together at one point and push that portion of the lower bead onto the rim. Continue to work around the tire in this way to install the lower bead into the wheel rim.
Step 7
Lay an inner tube on the tire and align in on the sidewall of the tire. Lift the upper tire bead and gently push the tube into place around the inside of the wheel rim. Reach inside the tire and insert the valve stem of the tube into the valve port on the wheel rim.
Step 8
Push down on the sidewall of the tire in one spot until that portion of the upper bead is below the edge of the wheel rim. Work around the tire in this way until the upper bead is seated below the rim.
Step 9
Inflate the tubeless or tubular tire using a tire pump. Check the pressure with the gauge and add more air if needed until the tire is inflated to the correct pressure. Use the gauge as before to reduce the tire pressure if necessary.
Tips and Warnings
- Refer to the owner's manual for detailed wheel removal procedures and cable adjustments. Inflate and deflate an inner tube after installing to eliminate creases or twists.
