While some skateboarders prefer street obstacles, others exclusively ride on manmade ramps. Certain components of the skate ramp remain dangerous. Ramp skaters commonly wear a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads to prevent serious injuries. Identifying the safety concerns will allow you to remain protected throughout the ramp riding techniques.
Vert Section
Many skate ramps feature a vertical slope near the top. Use the vert section to soar above the platform of the skate ramp. The vert portion of the ramp remains a common safety concern. According to ESPN, professional skateboarder Jake Brown slid out on the vert section and fell more than 50 feet to the flat bottom of the skateboarding ramp. Novice skaters should approach the vertical slope with a minimal amount of speed to avoid serious injuries.
Coping
Even with the proper safety gear, falling on the coping of the skateboarding ramp can result in bone breaking injuries. According to Transworld Skateboarding, the coping commonly consists of a metal bar with a hollow construction. The coping, fastened to the top lip of the ramp, allows you to perform a trick riding technique known as the grind. When learning to grind the coping, approach the top lip of the ramp with a minimal amount of speed.
Metal Ramps
As of 2010, most metal skate ramps have been deconstructed due to the safety concerns. However, metal ramps are still featured in skate parks across the United States. One of the main concerns of metal ramps deals with prolonged sun exposure. The sheet metal of the ramp can absorb heat during hot summer days. The heated metal can cause painful burns if your skin makes direct contact with the face of the ramp. Falling onto the sharp edge of a metal skate ramp can result in deep lacerations.
Other Skaters
Skateboarding ramps often have a large design that allows multiple skaters to ride at once. Attempt a doubles routine that involves performing tricks in unison with a fellow skater. While this activity remains fun, it can result in high-speed collisions. Keep a close watch on novice ramp skaters as they may not have the ability to quickly change the rolling direction of the board. Make sure to let other skaters know before you drop in to the ramp.
